Rydal in August, from the renovated coffin stand!

The walk around Rydal Water includes the "coffin route", the old road between Ambleside and Grasmere along which mourners would follow the coffin to burial. Before the 19th century Ambleside had no church and the residents of the town had to be buried in Grasmere. Along the route were coffin stands, where the bearers would lay the coffin whilst they took a rest. One of the stands has been renovated, and now serves as a seat for walkers to sit and admire the superb views across the water to Loughrigg
